Zhujiajiao Ancient Town: Shanghai's Venice

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, often referred to as Shanghai's Venice, is a charming water town with a history of over 1,700 years. Located in the Qingpu District, it is one of the best-preserved ancient towns near Shanghai, featuring traditional bridges, canals, and Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture. It offers a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

What to See and Do

  1. Boat Ride on the Canals: The best way to experience Zhujiajiao is by taking a traditional gondola-style boat ride along its waterways. This offers a unique perspective of the ancient buildings and bridges.

  2. Fangsheng Bridge (Release Life Bridge): This is the largest stone arch bridge in Zhujiajiao, built in 1571. It's a popular spot for photography and offers great views of the town.

  3. Ke Zhi Yuan (Ke Garden): A beautiful private garden with traditional Chinese landscaping, pavilions, and a tranquil pond. It's a perfect place for a leisurely stroll.

  4. North Street (Beidajie): The main pedestrian street, lined with traditional shops selling local handicrafts, souvenirs, and snacks. Try the famous Zhujiajiao Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and roasted soybeans.

  5. Post Office: Visit the Qing Dynasty Post Office, one of the oldest post offices in China, which now functions as a museum.

  6. Temples and Shrines: Explore various temples and shrines, such as the City God Temple and Yuanjin Temple, which reflect the town's rich cultural and religious heritage.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for exploring. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends and public holidays. Arrive early in the morning to experience the town's tranquility before the crowds arrive.

How to Get There

Take Metro Line 17 to Zhujiajiao Station (朱家角站). From there, the ancient town is a short walk away.

The Guangfu Lin Ruins are a Neolithic site. The cultural layers of the Guangfu Lin Ruins are divided into three layers. The upper layer is the Wu-Yue culture layer from the Spring and Autumn-Warring States period, the middle layer is the Maqiao culture layer from the Xia-Shang period, and the lower layer is the Liangzhu culture layer from the Neolithic period. The unearthed pottery shards with the characteristics of the Henan Yufang culture can be used to infer that the earliest ancestors of the people in Shanghai were from Henan. The remains of the Maqiao Culture and Songze Culture unearthed, etc., are witnesses to the life of the prehistoric people in Shanghai. The discovery of the Guangfu Lin Ruins has clarified the stratigraphic relationship between the Songze Culture, the Liangzhu Culture and the Guangfu Lin Culture, and has enriched the cultural sequence of the Neolithic period in the Taihu Lake region.
