More about the trip

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall: A Masterpiece of Lingnan Architecture and Folk Art

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as the Chen Clan Academy, is a magnificent complex of traditional Chinese buildings in Guangzhou. Built between 1888 and 1894, it served as an academy for the Chen family members from 72 counties of Guangdong Province to prepare for the imperial examinations, as well as a temporary residence and ancestral temple. Today, it houses the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum, showcasing exquisite Lingnan architectural decoration and folk art.

What to See and Do

  1. Architectural Grandeur: Admire the intricate and elaborate architectural details, which are a hallmark of Lingnan (Southern China) style. The complex features 19 buildings with nine halls and six courtyards, all connected by corridors.

  2. Three Carvings and Two Sculptures: The hall is famous for its "Three Carvings" (wood carving, stone carving, brick carving) and "Two Sculptures" (clay sculpture, plaster sculpture). Look for the incredibly detailed and vibrant roof ridges adorned with ceramic and plaster sculptures depicting mythical creatures, historical figures, and auspicious symbols.

  3. Wood Carvings: The wooden doors, windows, and beams are adorned with exquisite wood carvings, showcasing scenes from folk tales, historical events, and daily life.

  4. Iron Castings: The iron railings and gates feature delicate iron castings, another characteristic of Lingnan craftsmanship.

  5. Guangdong Folk Arts Museum: Inside, the museum displays a rich collection of traditional folk arts and crafts from Guangdong, including embroidery, paper-cutting, ivory carving, and pottery, providing a deeper understanding of the region's artistic heritage.

Best Time to Visit

The hall is an indoor and outdoor attraction, suitable for visiting year-round. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends and public holidays.
