Grand Song of the Dong Ethnic Group
The Grand Song of the Dong Ethnic Group, known as "Galao" in the Dong language, is a traditional polyphonic choral music form indigenous to the Dong people of China. Characterized by its multi-part harmonies performed without instrumental accompaniment or conductor, this musical tradition encompasses a wide range of themes, including folklore, children's songs, welcoming tunes, and imitations of natural sounds. The songs are typically performed in significant communal spaces such as drum towers, which serve as venues for ceremonies, entertainment, and meetings. In 2009, the Grand Song of the Dong Ethnic Group was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
